Finding a Wholesale Gemstone Supplier in India — A Buyer's Guide

Finding a Wholesale Gemstone Supplier in India — A Buyer's Guide

If you've spent any time searching for a wholesale gemstone supplier in India, you already know the problem isn't finding options. It's that there are too many, and most of them look identical from the outside. Jaipur alone has thousands of gem dealers, and unless you can walk into their workshop yourself, it's genuinely hard to tell who's the real deal and who's just reselling someone else's stock with a markup on top.

We've been doing this since 1986, cutting and manufacturing gemstones right here in Jaipur, and over the years we've had this same conversation with more first-time buyers than we can count. So here's what we actually tell people. Not the polished version. The real one.

First, just ask if they actually make the stones

It sounds almost too simple, but it's the single biggest thing that separates a good experience from a frustrating one. A huge number of "suppliers" online aren't manufacturers at all. They're buying from local workshops and passing the cost onto you. There's nothing dishonest about that necessarily, but it usually means less consistency, higher prices, and zero flexibility if you want something custom made. So just ask them directly: do you manufacture, or are you buying from someone else? People who actually make the product tend to answer that quickly and specifically. People who don't often get vague.

Don't say yes to bulk until you've held a sample

We'd never expect anyone to place a large order sight unseen, and honestly, you shouldn't work with anyone who does expect that of you. A small sample order first lets you actually feel the weight, see the true color under real light, and check the consistency across the strand. Things that never quite come through in a photo. If a supplier is pushing you straight into a big minimum order with no way to check quality first, that's a red flag worth paying attention to.

There's no single "right" MOQ or price, and that's actually a good sign

If you ask about minimum order quantity and get an instant, generic number with zero follow up questions, be a little skeptical. Every stone is different. Quality grade, size, how it's cut, how much you're ordering. Pricing genuinely depends on all of that. When a supplier takes the time to actually ask what you're looking for before quoting you, that's usually someone who's paying attention, not just reciting a script.

Ask the unglamorous questions too

How long does shipping actually take to reach you? What payment methods do they take, bank transfer, PayPal, something else? And if something arrives not quite matching what you expected, what happens then? These aren't exciting questions, but they're the ones that actually matter once money's changed hands. A supplier who answers clearly, without dodging, is one worth building a longer relationship with.

A nice catalog doesn't tell you much

Anyone can put together good product photos. What's harder to fake is real production knowledge. Someone who can talk you through how a particular stone is sourced and cut, who's happy to show you their actual workshop instead of just a gallery of finished pieces. That's usually the tell.
